Bern Chapter: Working for Urban Pigeons in Bern

The Bern Chapter of Stadttauben Schweiz is committed to raising awareness, building connections and promoting sustainable urban pigeon management. It is coordinated by Raffaela Röthlisberger, Vice President of Stadttauben Schweiz and the local coordinator for the Bern Chapter. Through her experience helping to manage pigeon lofts, she also has first-hand knowledge of the birds’ needs.

Urban Pigeon Management in Bern

Bern has had a municipal pigeon management programme for many years. Today, the city has around 1,100 urban pigeons and eight pigeon lofts managed by Tierpark Bern. However, these do not provide space and care for all of the city’s urban pigeons.

The chapter therefore advocates for further developing Bern’s approach towards the Augsburg Model, with appropriate feeding and systematic egg swapping. A particular focus is on urban pigeons living outside the existing lofts.

Raising Awareness and Connecting People

The chapter focuses on local activities, connecting people interested in urban pigeons and engaging with public authorities, experts and organisations. It also works closely with the national organisation and the Zurich and Lucerne Chapters.

One of its regular activities is the monthly Urban Pigeon Exchange. These open online meetings offer an insight into current projects and topics and provide an opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas.

A Vision for Bern

The goal is a healthy urban pigeon population that is sustainably managed and remains stable over the long term, with an approach that combines population management with appropriate care. The chapter also aims to increase understanding of the origins and needs of urban pigeons and challenge common misconceptions.

Get Involved in Bern

Anyone who would like to get to know the chapter, get involved or simply listen in is warmly invited to join the monthly online meeting. There are also opportunities to support individual activities and projects.

Further information, upcoming dates and contact details can be found on the Bern Chapter page.
